Our Search For Peace

Peace is a major concern for everyone.  Millions if not billions of dollars are spent each year trying to come up with a plan that would bring peace to the world. Yet with all the efforts from a myriad of people and countries, still no one has a feasible plan for creating world peace.  The truth is, we may never have world peace until Jesus comes back!  But that doesn't mean we can't have peace in our heart regardless of what's happening in the world.  Jesus can give us a "peace that passes all understanding."

It's sad that most people have no idea of what true peace really is or what is the source of true peace.  Some may experience brief moments of peace, but never realize it as being something that can be a permanent way of life.  God's desire is for everyone to live a transformed life full of peace, joy, and happiness.  Colossians 3:15 instructs us that God wants His peace to "live and rule in your heart."  God is the one and only true source of lasting peace.

We must have peace in three different relationships.  The first one is:

1. Peace with God.
There was a time when we were far away from God.  We had no promise, we had no hope, and we were separated from God. But the birth of Jesus proclaims that God in His love, sent us His Son, that through Him we could have peace with God by making Jesus Christ our Savior.  In fact, the only way to God is through Jesus Christ.

The concept that Jesus is the only way to have peace with God is difficult for many to accept because we live in a world that embraces virtually everything, and says that one religion is as good as another, or one way of life is as good as another.  And when Christianity affirms that there is only one way to God, the world views it as narrow and closed minded.  But telling the truth as it is identified in God's Word is not narrow minded.  If a doctor were to tell you that insulin was the only suitable medication for your diabetes, would you insist on taking aspirin for a cure and call him "narrow minded" because he insisted that you take insulin?  He isn't being narrow minded, he is being loving and compassionate because he is telling you the truth.

When the church preaches the truth it may be perceived as being narrow minded but in reality it is being loving and compassionate.  Peace with God, only comes through Jesus Christ.

2. Peace With Ourselves.

Jesus is the source of our peace within. We can be at peace with ourselves because we are at peace with Jesus, the "Prince of Peace."  Ephesians 2:13 states "For he is our peace, who hath made both one..."  Jesus offers us a peace that no matter what the circumstances are around us, we can be at peace within ourselves.  As long as we are just "flirting" with Christianity we will never be at peace with God or ourselves.  It is only when we have surrendered ourselves to God, and God has filled up the vacuum and emptiness inside of us that peace will come.

3.  Peace With One Another.

Jesus is also the source of our peace among others.  It's ironic that the very place of the birth of the Prince of Peace is also a place where there has always been conflict and war.  It is estimated that in all of recorded history, that less than 8 percent can be described as times of peace.  Over the past 300 years there have been over 280 wars in Europe.  From 1500 B.C. to A.D. 1860 there have been more than 8,000 peace treaties signed with the intent to last forever, but the average time they actually remained in effect was for only two years.

Humanity is constantly at "odds" with one another. Our courts are a good indication of how difficult it is for people to live in harmony and peace.  The good news is that in this war-torn world, God sent His personal, visible representative of "peace on earth, and good will toward men."

If we are to have peace with others, we must have peace with God and ourselves and that only comes through emptying ourselves before Him.  When we have made peace with God, we can begin to live at peace with ourselves and with others.

When was the last time you experienced absolute peace in your heart?  Did it last?  If not, then it's time to turn your life over to the Prince of Peace, Jesus Christ!  When you let Jesus rule and reign in your heart He will guard your heart in peaceful ways beyond what you can ever imagine!

How Should Christians Celebrate Christmas (Part 2)

This is the last part on my discussion regarding how Christians should celebrate Christmas.  The intent of both my posts is to simply bring some clarity to this very important event...the birth of the Incarnate Deity, Jesus Christ.

Argument #4: Christmas Trees are Condemned by God

It is thought that in Jeremiah 10:2-4 that God explicitly condemned the Christmas Tree.  As you read that passage, there is a resemblance between the thing described in Jeremiah 10 and the Christmas tree, but "resemblance" does not equal "identity."  What Jeremiah described was an idol---a representation of a false god, as the next verse Jeremiah 10:5 clearly shows--"[Their idols] are like pillars of turned work...do not be afraid of them, for they cannot do evil, neither is it possible for them to do good." (AMP).

A careful examination of these scriptures shows, that God is not condemning trees of any sort, including Christmas trees, but rather the use of the trees cut down and shaped into idols for the sole purpose of idol worship.  The context for these scriptures is the denunciation of making and worshiping idols and not the decoration of evergreen trees in the home.

We don't put Christmas trees up for the purpose of worshiping them, if we did we would leave them up all year long and not put it into a box to be stored in the attic for another 11 months!

Argument #5: The Uncertainty of the Date of Christ's Birth

Many will say that we don't know when Jesus was born and that December 25 was the date of a pagan festival in the Roman Empire in the fourth century, which is when Christmas began to be widely celebrated.

The fact that December 25 was a date of a pagan festival doesn't prove that Christmas is pagan and it doesn't invalidate the celebration of Christ's birth which we call Christmas.  It is believed that to take a pagan festival and try to "Christianize" it is folly.  However, God did exactly that in the Old Testament.  Historical evidence shows conclusively that some of the feasts given to Israel by God were originally pagan agricultural festivals which were filled with idolatrous imagery and practices.

What God did, in effect, was to establish feasts which would replace the pagan festivals without adopting any of the idolatry or immorality associated with them.  It would appear, then, that in principle there is nothing wrong with doing so in the case of Christmas.

Argument #6: What about Santa Claus?

Christmas can involve children in the belief of Santa Claus, a mythical figure, which certainly can detract from the person of Christ.  Parents need to be careful with this mythical figure.

Santa Claus originated with a man by the name of St. Nicholas who went about, often at night, giving gifts to the poor and needy children.  Over the years, the story and legend grew in country after country with various details being deleted and added so that we have our present day Santa Claus here in America.

Parents should treat this character for what it is, a fairy tale much like we might look at Alice in Wonderland or Jack and the Beanstalk.  Parents, don't make Santa out to be some god and don't "lie" to your children that they better be good or Santa won't come.  If you want to present Santa to your children then do it in a manner where it is "make believe" and a fun way to pretend.

Argument #7: Christmas Traditions are from Paganism

We have to understand, that many of our traditions had their origins in paganism.  Even the names of the days of the week  had their origin in pagan beliefs.  Thursday was the "god of thunder," Tuesday was the "god of war," and Sunday and Monday were related to the worship of the sun and moon.  Yet all of the associations of these pagan and ancient beliefs lost their meanings long ago, so that now we think nothing of them.  The same can be said for Christmas traditions.  If we observe the days of the week or the Christmas season with their ancient associations in mind, then certainly it would be wrong.  But many of these things, as with our Sunday, have been given Christian connotations.

I pray you have a very Merry Christmas with your family and always keep in mind that Jesus is the reason we celebrate this special day!

How Should Christians Celebrate Christmas (Part 1)

Let's face it, most everyone will agree that Christmas, as the world celebrates it, has been commercialized, secularized, and materialized.  It would be hard to argue against that point.  But having said that, does that mean, Christians, are to completely abandon any recognition of Christmas and follow the belief that celebrating the birth of the Savior of the world (Jesus the Christ) is in essence promoting paganism and materialism?  I hardly think so.  I would like to take a reasoned and Biblical approach to examining many of the arguments people present when they are "opposed" to Christians celebrating Christmas.

Argument #1: Christmas is Commercialized and Materialistic
For the most part, this is true.  But isn't it always the work of Satan to distort and ruin everything in life.  Even the story about the birth of Christ is often distorted, mocked, or misrepresented.  Yet the Bible is very clear that this event was important!  It was prophesied about in the Old Testament and is recorded in three of the four Gospels.  If we use the argument that Christmas is commercialized and materialistic as a legitimate reason for discarding the entire celebration of Christ's birth at Christmas, it would follow that we would end up having to throw out many things that we use and value everyday, Bibles, our spouses, marriage, the church, food, etc. Why?  Because Satan and man distorts and ruins all of these and even more.

We celebrate other holidays and don't consider them to be pagan, yet they are commercialized as much as Christmas.  Holidays such as New Years, Labor Day, Mother's Day, 4th of July, Easter or Resurrection Sunday, etc.  Just because the world distorts something, does not make it evil.  Some will say 1 Thessalonians 5:22 tells us to "abstain from all appearance of evil."  But a quick study of the Greek word for "appearance" shows us that the word really means "form" or "kind" of evil.  We are to avoid not what may "appear" evil, but those things that are genuinely evil according to the Word of God.

If God thought that the birth of the Savior was important enough to include in the Bible, then shouldn't we consider it important enough to recognize and celebrate?  Not as the world does, but as we chose!

Argument #2: Scripture Doesn't Authorize It

There are many, many things, days, and ideas that we embrace every day that the Bible does not specifically authorize.  For example, where in the Bible does it tell us to sing from hymnals, or use a "public address" system, or utilize any form of multimedia?  Where in the Bible does it authorize Christian schools, Sunday School, or service on a Wednesday night? If we only use the Bible for validating special services or seasons, then we would not celebrate Thanksgiving Day or have a "dedication service" for a new building.  Why?  Because the only illustrations of such things are found in the Old Testament and not the New Testament.

Just because "scripture doesn't authorize" something or some celebration, doesn't mean it not legitimate or makes it some how pagan in nature.

Argument #3: Scripture Doesn't Mention Celebrating Jesus' Birthday

This is one of the most basic arguments brought against celebrating Christmas.  Some believe that since the only people in the Bible who celebrated their own birthdays were the evil men, Pharaoh and Herod that God takes a dim view of celebrating birthdays in general.  And therefore, God would not approve of celebrating Jesus' birthday.

First of all, the Bible says nothing against the practice of celebrating birthdays.  What was bad in the cases of Pharaoh and Herod was not that they celebrated their birthdays, but that they did evil on their birthdays.  I can go to a game with friends and there is nothing wrong or evil about it.  But many there may "participate" in what you might say are "evil" activities, but I do not, does that make going to the game "evil?"  Absolutely not!  The issue isn't the game or the observance of Christmas, but the reason, attitudes, spirit, and actions in which it is done.

There is scriptural precedent for commemorating and remembering the birth of Christ:
  • The appearance of the angels to announce the birth of Christ (Luke 2:10-12)
  • The response of the angels at the announcement (Luke 2:13-14)
  • The actions of the shepherds to go to the birth place (Luke 2:15-20)
  • The arrival of the men from the east bearing gifts as much as 2 years later after the birth (Matthew 2:1-12)
The early church met on Sunday in celebration of the Lord's resurrection, but scripture doesn't command us to do so.  In fact the believers met daily in the early church.  Does that mean we should do the same?  No, because that is not a "binding" command.  Believers met on Sunday because of its significance and because the early church set a precedent for it, but it was never commanded in the Bible.

Ultimately, the issue is not the season, it's the attitude and reason behind it.

More to come in the next post....

The Foundation of Truth and Righteousness

In the midst of a society that is without morals and values it is important for Christians to make a difference and strive for truth and righteousness.  It is only truth and righteousness that will help us to meet the challenge of becoming morally pure in a society that is morally bankrupt, and it is only on the foundation of truth and righteousness that we will be able to raise godly children. Psalms 89:14 declares that "Justice and judgment are the habitation of thy throne: mercy and truth shall go before thy face."  You see, truth and righteousness are the ways of God and we must understand that as Christians we are in a battle for these holy principles and Satan is doing everything in his power to steal the truth from the hearts and minds of Christians.

The Foundation of Truth

When Jesus was brought before Pilate, He had a very interesting conversation with him concerning truth.  During their exchange in John 18:37-38 Pilate asks Jesus the question "What is truth?"  Pilate had heard from so many voices that he wasn't sure what the truth was concerning Jesus.  You see, truth can be a very nebulous concept unless we have an absolute source of truth.  Without the acknowledgement of God, who is the source of all truth, there is no such thing as truth and as a result truth becomes what ever is right for the individual.  A foundation of truth must be established in our lives if we are going to have any hope. So what is the foundation for truth?
  1. Jesus is the Source of all Truth.  Jesus declared that He was "the way, the truth, and the life."  All truth proceeds from Him and is established upon His words and commands.  He represents the absolute standard from which all measurements of truth flows.  He has given us the Holy Spirit, who leads us into all truth.
  2. The Word of God is Truth.  "Sanctify them through thy truth, thy word is truth."  Truth is the foundation for our sanctification and holiness.
  3. What Happens When Truth is Denied?  Because real truth is a such a foundation to our basic morals and values we will see a decay in our society when we deviate or deny the real truth.  The foundation of truth must be restored and we must come back to the absolutes of Biblical authority, recognizing that God is the source of all truth.
The Real War is Over Truth

We must realize the real war with Satan isn't over abortion, homosexuality, murder, drugs, gang violence, corrupted morals, etc.  These are but symptoms of the war over truth.  Satan's battle is with the truth.  Satan's lies have inundated our society and culture, which has had its affect upon our lives and our children's lives.  Too many people believe that all truth is relative to your situation, personal taste and cultural choice."  And as a result, with the absence of absolute truth, each person does what is right in their own eyes.

It's time for us to put on the armor of God with our waist girded with truth and recover what was taken from us.  We must raise high the banner of truth.  It is time for absolute truth to be restored.  What are you doing to spread the foundation of truth and righteousness?  Is it enough, or could you do more?

Characteristics of the New Testament Church

In Matthew 16:18 Jesus gave Peter and the future New Testament Church a powerful promise.  He stated that "...upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it."  Jesus is building His Church and it is exciting to be a part of it.  Jesus defined the New Testament Church with two words: power and unity.  The New Testament Church is a church where believers are bonded together by the Holy Spirit, doing the work of God.  There is no time to be complacent, it is time to get busy for God.

So what does this New Testament Church look like?  I believe there are eight distinct characteristics that identify the church according to the book of Acts.
  1. It is a Church with Happy People.  Throughout the book of Acts the believers were depicted as a "joyful" group of people.  Acts 8:8 "And there was great joy in that city." Acts 13:52 "And the disciples were filled with joy, and with the Holy Ghost."  Acts 15:3 "...and they caused great joy unto all the brethren."  You and I are called to be happy and joyful, not sad!  Don't go by feelings, stir up your spirit that is in you for "the joy of the Lord is your strength."
  2. It is a Loving Church that Cares For one Another.  Caring for each other is one of the greatest commands of the New Testament.  In the Acts, evidence of the believers caring for each other is found in their willingness to sell "their possessions and goods, and part them to all men, as every man had need."  If we desire to be the Church Christ desires us to be, then we must care for each other.
  3. It is a Church of Miracles.  The Church in Acts had faith and power and they expected miracles.  It is time that we begin to believe God for miracles.  Miracles for salvation of loved ones, for healing, and for finances.  We cannot expect miracles of we don't operate in faith and power of the Holy Spirit.
  4. It is a Church of Unity. "...they were all with one accord in one place." (Acts 2:1-4); "And the multitude of them that believed were of one heart and of one soul..." (Acts 4:32); "And the people with one accord gave heed unto those things which Philip spake..." (Acts 8:6); and there are many many other instances of this demonstration of unity within the church.  God's Church is "one!"  It isn't uniform, but it is in unity.
  5. It is a Church that is Committed.  If the Church is to have miracles follow its ministry, it will have to be committed.  Committed to God's Word, committed to ministry, committed to one another, committed to the call, purpose, and commission of Jesus Christ.
  6. It is a Church that Walks in Favor.  Acts 2:47 tells us that the believers were "Praising God, and having favour with all the people.  And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved."  As God's Church we can and should walk in favor with God and man.
  7. It is a Church of Power and Authority.  Acts 1:8 "But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you..."  Christ and given His Church the power and authority to carry on His unfinished work of sharing the gospel with all the world.  It is a great responsibility that God has entrusted to us, but He hasn't left us ill equipped, we have the power of the Holy Spirit living within us.
  8. It is a Church that has a Vision.  To be a part of the New Testament Church you must have a vision.  A vision for your life, your family, your church, and your community.  And it is God who gives life to the vision he has given you.
Jesus Christ is "building His Church."  He wants all of us to be a part of it.  Are you a part of His Church?  If not, then you can be...just simply ask God to forgive you of your sins and believe on Jesus as your Savior!  If you are a part of His Church, then what are you doing to help build the Church of Jesus Christ?  Get involved today and help fulfill God's great commission to "go into all the world and preach the good news of Jesus Christ."

Growing Up Spiritually

One of the saddest things you can witness is the "lack of spiritual growth" in the life of a Believer.  Many people I know, have been Christians for years, yet they have had little change or spiritual growth in their lives and as a result they are less effective for the Lord now than they were when they first became a Christian.  It's important to know that spiritual growth doesn't happen by default.  Spiritual growth only occurs when we do what is required to grow.  God's Word gives us several insights as to why spiritual growth is necessary and how it can happen in your life.

1.  It Is A Command

Peter ends his second epistle with the command to grow in "grace" and in "knowledge."  It is only through the grace and knowledge of God that we can grow and mature spiritually.  This growth is not an option that is reserved for a "select few Christians."  The Word of God commands us to grow.  We cannot just sit still and expect growth to happen.  Peter also admonishes the believers how to grow.  In 2 Peter 1:5-8 the word tells us to add to our faith such graces as virtue, knowledge, self control, etc.  Abounding in these graces will cause us to be fruitful which implies a growth process.  All of this takes work which brings me to my second point.

2.  Growth Requires Diligent Effort

Unless there is some physical disorder, people will grow physically just by virtue of the passage of time, physical activity, and eating properly.  But just because you grow older and bigger doesn't mean you grow spiritually.  There must be effort and diligence in growing spiritually.  Two times in 2 Peter, the Apostle tells the reader to give "diligence" to their spiritual calling.  And Paul told Timothy that spiritual growth requires regular exercise (1 Timothy 4:7-8).  Spiritual growth isn't easy, you must work at it everyday!

3. Spiritual Growth is Assisted by God

Thankfully, we are not alone in our efforts to grow spiritually.  It is God who strengthens our efforts.  You and I cannot do it ourselves, we must have God to help us.  How does God strengthen us?
  • He strengthens us by His Spirit in our inner man (Ephesians 3:16)
  • He empowers us with unimaginable power that is in us (Ephesians 3:20)
  • He provides the armor to stand strong in the power of His might (Ephesians 6:10-11)
  • He strengthens us through Christ so there are no excuses (Philippians 4:13)
With God  as our helper, spiritual growth is possible.  Just as a parent helps their children to grow, our Heavenly Father will help you.

God has blessed our spiritual growth now.  It isn't something we have to wait till we get to heaven to enjoy.  Ephesians 1:3  tells us "Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ who hath blessed us will all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ."  Those are blessings for us today!

What kind of growth is taking place in your spiritual life?  Is it a vibrant kind of growth in which you are abounding in love, joy, and peace, being faithful and fruitful in your service to Jesus Christ?

The Nature of Compromise (Part 2)

In my last post I covered the nature of compromise and what it is that people compromise on.  In this post I want to cover why people compromise, the consequences of compromise, and the characteristics of a person who won't compromise.

Why People Compromise

No doubt there are many reasons why people compromise on their faith.  Some include:
  • Fear of what others may think or say
  • To avoid conflict
  • For acceptance
  • Peer pressure
  • For profit
  • It's the easy way
  • Spiritually weak
When it comes to the important issues of your faith, there are no valid reasons to compromise on the truths of the Bible.  You must stand firm on the foundation that your faith is built upon.
Consequences of Compromise

Compromising on issues of our faith can have some serious consequences. If you aren't careful you will find yourself weaker and less effective each time you compromise.  Some consequences include

  • It weakens you spiritually
  • It hurts your prayer life
  • It infiltrates all areas of your life
  • You develop a lack of conscience for right and wrong
  • You end up abandoning God's Word
  • You become untrustworthy
Characteristics of a Person Who Won't Compromise
  • They have a strong conviction about the Bible (they know what they believe)
  • They have faith in the promises of God
  • They have courage to stand when no one else will stand with them
  • They are secure in their relationship with God
  • They can easily discern right from wrong
  • They have a sense of direction
  • They are governed by principle, not preference
  • They want God's approval over man's
Have you been guilty of compromise?  Are you compromising on important issues now?  If so, what if anything, are you doing about it?   Leave some feedback in the comments section.

The Nature of Compromise (Part 1)

It's been said that "compromise is the sacrifice of one right or good in hopes of retaining another---but often resulting in the loss of BOTH!"  Unfortunately, too often this is true.  Compromise isn't always bad because it is a useful tool when trying to reach a settlement or in resolving a conflict between two parties.  But when we compromise on serious issues of faith and morality, now that's a different story.

Compromise Defined: There are several definitions for compromise.  The one I want to emphasize is--to settle by concessions on both sides or to surrender (one's principles).  It is this surrendering of one's principles that makes compromise so dangerous.  It's one thing to compromise when discussing where your family may vacation.  There will always be a "give and take" when trying to reach a decision of that nature.  But to compromise in one's faith or morality is totally different.  This type of compromise can dangerously affect your life!

Nature of Compromise

Compromise often starts out as something "small and insignificant."  But what happens is that it becomes a slow digression that ultimately leads to more and more serious compromises.  Compromise weakens our spirit man each time we let our guard down and compromise on an issue that our spirit tells us we shouldn't.  Make no mistake about it, every time we compromise we "lose."  Compromise is a subtle and deadly poison.  It takes a careful examination of our lives to rid ourselves of compromise.

What People Compromise

People can compromise on many issues.  You will find they compromise on their morals, principles they know are true, their church attendance, issues with children, their dress, language, conversation, integrity, and the list goes on.

A quick survey of statistics from the Barna Group is evidence that Christians are compromising many of their basic beliefs:
  • Christians spend seven times more time on entertainment as they do on spiritual activities.
  • Desiring to have a "close personal" relationship with God ranks 6th among the 21 life goals tested.
  • Among "born again" adults interviewed none stated that the "single most important goal in their life is to be a committed follower of Jesus Christ."
  • Two-thirds of teens know the basic teachings of the Christian faith, yet 2/3 reject the existence of Satan, 3/5 reject the existence of the Holy Spirit, and 1/2 believe that Jesus sinned.
  • When in comes to "absolute moral truth" one 44% of born again adults and 9% of born again teens believe it exists.
  • Activities that are deemed "morally acceptable" among the majority of Americans include gambling (61%), co-habitation (60%), sexual fantasies (59%).
  • Other disturbing trends of "acceptable" behaviors: having an abortion (45%), sexual relationship outside of marriage (42%), pornography (38%), profanity (36%) drunkenness (35%), and homosexual sex (30%).
These statistics and others should be an alarm that compromise is prevalent not only in society as a whole, but in the church as well.  What are you compromising?  Are there areas where you may have let your guard down?  We must maintain a vigilance in keeping the faith and maintaining a moral compass that keeps us from compromising the important areas of our life.

People of Faith

As Christians we all desire to be successful in what God has called us to do and be.  True success however, is determined by our ability to walk by faith.  Hebrews 10:38 tells us "Now the just shall live by faith; but if any man draw back, my soul shall have no pleasure in him."  It is by faith that we should live our lives!  If we are to fulfill the will of God in our lives we must be people of faith.  The Bible is full of examples of people who lived their lives with faith in God.

There are seven attitudes you must possess that will help you become a person of faith.  These were exemplified in the lives of many Biblical characters and it was these seven attitudes that enabled them to go from "faith to faith" when the natural circumstances of their lives seemed hopeless or impossible.

  1. Possess a thorough understanding of submission and authority -- When the centurion asked Jesus to heal his paralyzed servant, Jesus was willing to go to the place and heal him.  But because the centurion was a man under authority, he understood and recognized Jesus' authority to heal.  So he simply told Jesus to speak the word and it would be done.  Jesus did and the servant was healed and then Jesus turned to those listening and declared "I have not found anyone in Israel with such great faith."  (Matthew 8:5-10).  To be real people of faith, we must understand submission and authority and it's roll in answered prayer.
  2. Worship the Lord with reverence -- People of faith have an attitude of worship and reverence towards God.  The word worship means to bow down and give reverence. When we do this, it puts us in a place of relationship so we can hear clearly what God wants to say to us.  Worshiping God with reverence helps us to be people of faith.
  3. Convinced that Jesus is able -- We must be fully convinced that God is able to do what He has promised through Jesus Christ.  Convinced means to be "completely certain about something;" "firm in one's belief."  People of faith are completely certain that Jesus is able to do everything He has promised.  Are you convinced that God is able to perform all He promised through the New Covenant that was established through Jesus Christ?
  4. Press in regardless of the obstacles -- There are many obstacles, disappointments, worldly cares, distractions, and trials that will try to cause you to lose heart and not press in.  Sometimes the only answer we have is to "press in," not give up but know through the difficulty, the prayer will be answered.  Just like the woman with the issue of blood in Luke 8:43-48 pressed in to touch Jesus, you too at times, must press in to touch the Savior!
  5. Exhibit boldness in the midst of unbelief and mockery -- When we take steps of faith it sometimes seems foolish to those around us, but we need to press in regardless of how foolish it may seem or who may be mocking us.  It is the boldness that will take us to the next level of faith!
  6. Be Persistent -- Don't give up if you don't see immediate results.  Keep believing and standing on the Word and know that the answer is on the way.  Too many times we quit believing just before God is ready to reveal His majesty in our lives.  Once you have prayed with faith, then continue to claim God's promise!
  7. Act upon your faith -- James tells us that faith without works is dead!  We must act on what we believe and what God has promised.  People of faith do more than just pray, they also "do."
Working to make these seven attitudes a part of your daily life will help you become a person of faith.  Faith doesn't just happen...it is a spiritual part of our lives that we have to cultivate and grow.  If you want to be a person of faith, begin by working on these seven attitudes in your lifefulol.

Boldness For Christ

Romans 1:16-18

Let me begin by stating the obvious...Christianity is under tremendous attack!  Having said that, let me also say that our response can be either one of "poor me, I'm so mistreated" or we can acknowledge that the reason Christians are so persecuted is because the devil knows the power of God's Word and he knows it's ability to change people's lives.

As Christians, we must learn to expect "attacks" from the enemy and to respond with a "boldness" that stands up for the truth.  We are entrusted with the greatest message in the world, the message of salvation and righteousness!  Romans 1:16-18 is a clear declaration of God's power to save all who believe, no matter who they are.  Paul wasn't ashamed of the gospel, and we shouldn't be either.  Let's look at four aspects of the Gospel that Paul affirmed.

  1. For I Am Not Ashamed--The reason Paul wasn't ashamed of the gospel, was because he knew that it was the "good news" from God Himself and was given to be proclaimed to the entire world!  This message that Paul proclaimed was considered foolishness to the intellectuals (the Greeks) and a stumbling block to his own people (the Jews).  No matter how much Paul was ridiculed he still continued to preach and teach the truth of God's Word.  We cannot be ashamed of something so powerful and true!  It is time we declare with a convinced voice that the gospel of Jesus Christ is the only answer to the world's problems.
  2. The Gospel Is The Power Of God--Paul wasn't ashamed because the gospel is the power of God to save.  This word power means might, strength, energy, force, and strength of God.  The power is not only "of God," this power is God's very nature!  God chose to use His power in a loving and merciful way by sending humanity the good news that salvation is possible through His Son Jesus Christ.  The only hope of the entire world is God's salvation.  1 Timothy 2:4 "...God our Savior, who wants all men to be saved and come to the knowledge of the truth."  God saves all who believe.  Belief is the one condition for salvation, but we must always remember that a person who really believes commits himself to what he believes.
  3. Unto Salvation--When we look at the word "salvation" it has many meanings as it applies to our lives.  Salvation is: deliverance from being lost.  It is deliverance from sin, mistakes, corrupt ideas and thoughts.  It is also deliverance from enemies and dangers that come against us.  The gospel is the power of God to deliver us from all these and more.  Salvation means that God gives security and peace to the soul and gives us inward strength and courage to bear the onslaught and attacks of the devil.  Finally, salvation means to make well, to heal, to restore to health, and to make well both physically and mentally.  The power of the gospel brings salvation to the world!
  4. For The Righteousness Of God Is Revealed--Paul was not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the revelation of God's righteousness.  Humanity has a serious problem thinking that they can some how be righteous within themselves.  Scripture is very clear that our righteousness is as "filthy rags" in the sight of God.  The only answer to humanity's problem is faith in God and His power to save them.
We have no reason to be ashamed of the gospel of Christ.  It is the good news and provides everything we need in this life and the life to come.  God is looking for boldness!  Are you willing to stand up and declare this great gospel of Christ that has the power to save and set free?

Does Knowing The Bible Matter?

John 8:31-32; 1 Thessalonians 2:13
Have you ever wondered why some people find it so easy to change what they believe, or why in today’s culture there is such instability among many Christians?  Could it be that many view the preaching and teaching of the Word of God as unimportant and even “dull and boring?”  Has the “high-tech” era of communication and entertainment caused people to be more interested in the lights, drama, music, and hype than in the truth of God’s Word?  We have to be careful to not build our spiritual lives on the “shallowness” of the entertainment because if entertainment is the foundation for our spiritual lives, then we will be easily “tossed to a fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine.”  The foundation God wants all of us to build our lives upon is our faith in Him and in His Word.  It is difficult to have faith in something you do not know!  That’s why knowing the Bible really does matter!

  • ·         We are commanded to study and know the truth.  Knowing the truth enables you to better use the truth!  “Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.”  Don’t rely on just what others tell you, study the truth for yourself.
  • ·         We are commanded to defend the truth.  We are to defend the truth of God’s Word with meekness and fear.  1 Peter 3:15 “But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear.”  When you are confident about the truth, you are able to defend it with gentleness and a quiet reverence.
  • ·         Bible truth helps you know God better.  If you are going to get to know God you have to know the truth about Him.  You cannot develop a relationship with God based on your guesses or wishes about what He is like.  The primary way we find out more about God is through His Word.
  • ·         Bible knowledge is an essential foundation.  The Word of God is the only foundation strong enough to build our lives upon.  Just as you have to know your ABC’s before you can read and write, you have to know the truth about God and His Word before you can live right.
  • ·         Bible truth feeds you.  Bible knowledge is food for our soul and spirit!  You need solid food not only to keep growing in faith but also to sustain the spiritual life you already have.  If you stop feeding on God’s Word, your spiritual life will weaken.  Hebrews 5:12-14.
  • ·         Bible knowledge determines how you act.  What we believe determines our behavior.  Thoughts generally result in actions.  You cannot change the way you act without changing the way you believe.  It is God’s truth that changes the way we believe and the way we act.
  • ·         Knowing the truth protects against error.  Once you get rooted in God’s Word, it will be difficult for anyone to lead you astray with false doctrine.  The best way to protect yourself against error of any kind is to know the truth.
Does knowing the Bible really matter?  Absolutely!  Jesus declared that you will know the truth and the truth shall set you free.  But if we don’t know what truth is then we will never be free!  What steps are you taking to know God more and to be free?

Overcoming the Bondage of Rejection

Proverbs 29:25
To reject something means to “throw back.”  Now, if you are a parachute quality control inspector I would hope you would “throw back” every parachute that doesn’t meet the strictest of quality standards because every parachute should be rejected if it isn’t going to open properly.  But when it comes to human relationships we have to be careful that we don’t build into people or our children a spirit of “rejection.”  It’s unfortunate that many people are bound by a spirit of rejection and as a result rather than driving them to God; it drives them away from God.  This bondage of rejection causes people to believe they aren’t worthy of God’s love or of the love from anyone else for that matter.

The Nature and Characteristics of Rejection:
  • ·         It allows others to manipulate you
  • ·         It causes you to conform to peer pressure (Romans 12:2 admonishes us to not be conformed to the world, but be transformed by the renewing of our mind!)
  • ·         It prevents you from giving and receiving love in a healthy manner
  • ·         It produces depression
  • ·         Rejection often creates a critical spirit in yourself and others
  • ·         Anger and bitterness are fruits of rejection
The causes of rejection are many.  Some include:
  • ·         Hurtful and painful events in your life
  • ·         Death of a loved one
  • ·         Divorce
  • ·         Parents
  • ·         The church
  • ·         And many other uncontrollable events in our life.
How to be Free from the Bondage of Rejection

Affirming your position in Christ on a daily basis is the most effective way to overcome this spirit and bondage of rejection.  The Word of God gives us many scriptures that validate who you are and what you have in Christ.  If you suffer and are in bondage to this spirit of rejection, here are some scriptures that can help you overcome this feeling of rejection:
  • ·         Romans 5:5-8 – God loves you “unconditionally”
  • ·         Romans 8:1 – When you ask God to forgive you of a wrong, you are forgiven!
  • ·         Romans 8:15 – You are accepted by God and are a member of His family
  • ·         2 Corinthians 5:17 – You are complete and new in Christ
  • ·         John 14:16-17 – The Holy Spirit dwells in you to help you and guide you
If you ever question how much God loves you, just remember that God demonstrated His vast and eternal love for you through the death of His Son, Jesus, on the cross.  Rejection can be a difficult emotion to deal with.  Many in our world feel this strong emotion, but there is hope through understanding that the One who made you, doesn’t reject you!  He loves you and desires to have a close and bonding relationship.  He is ready are you?

Overcoming Your Insecurity

Insecurity is a real problem with many people.  Individuals live their entire lives feeling like they never "measure up" to what others expect of them, and they are constantly comparing themselves to other people.  God's desire for each of us is to live in such a way that we are confident and secure in who we are in Christ and what we can do in His power.  However, people with insecurity never see themselves as God sees them.  God looks at each person as important and valuable.  Fortunately for us, God doesn't judge us by the standards of the world and the world's expectation, but He looks at us based on our future not our past.  And God deals with us on the basis of what we can do, not what we haven't done!  Romans 8:35-39 tells us that "nothing will ever separate us from the love of  Christ!"  No matter what we face, no matter what the world thinks of us, God will always love us.  With that in mind, let's examine some of the causes, effects, and solutions to insecurity.

There are many causes for insecurity.  Some of them include:
    • Unpredictable childhood environments
    • Tragedy
    • Underdeveloped skill and talents because of a lack of encouragement
    • Unrealistic rules and regulations
    • Poor self-image
    • Growing up without positive feedback
Effects of insecurity include:
    • Difficult time establishing lasting friendships
    • Indecisiveness
    • Anger
    • Problems meeting other people
    • Attempts to hide their insecurity
How to deal with insecurity:
    • Acknowledge that insecurity is a spiritual problem
    • Reinforce your relationship with God
    • Acknowledge your feelings and identify the way you are
    • Realize the way you see yourself is not necessarily the way you are
    • Focus on the positive qualities of your life
    • Stop comparing yourself to others
    • Overcome any doubts through the Word of God
Although some insecurities are very deeply rooted and may take years to overcome, the Holy Spirit can miraculously change our way of thinking about ourselves if we will only allow Him.  As children of God we are sons and daughters of the Most High King and as such we should act accordingly.  If you struggle in this area, here are several scriptures that may help you conquer your insecurity.  (Romans 8:37; 2 Corinthians 10:4; Ephesians 6:10; Philippians 4:13; Colossians 1:13; 2 Timothy 1:7; 1 John 4:4; Romans 5:17; Romans 8:31; Isaiah 54:17; Proverbs 3:5-6; Romans 12:2; John 8:31-32; Galatians 3:13-14)

What insecurity are you dealing with, that God is ready to deliver you from?

Walking Away From God

Is it really that easy to "walk away" from God?  Of course God is ever calling His children, but unfortunately many of His children do not listen.  Because of the day in which we live, it is certainly easier to act like the Prodigal Son than it was 20 or 30 years ago and as a result we see many people walking away from God and the blessings He has for them.

People walk away from God for various reasons, but it is much easier when people fail to get connected in a local church, that's why the community of believers is so vital.  This connection helps them to create relationships that will encourage, strengthen and involve them in the Body of Christ.  Let's look at a few questions and answers as they relate to walking away from God.

  • Why Do People Walk Away From God?
    • They allow deception to "creep" in unaware
    • Fear of "missing out" on some pleasure that living in sin would bring
    • Desire for freedom to do what they like
    • Unforgiveness -- allowing past hurts to drive them away
    • Denial of potential consequences -- thinking they can live in sin without reaping the consequences.

  • How will the Lord respond if you walk away from Him?
    • He will continue to love you
    • He will bring a conviction in your spirit
    • He will continually remind you of the wrong you are doing
    • He will allow you to continue in what you have chosen until you are ready to return
  • How can you return to God?
    • Follow the example of the Prodigal Son (Luke 15:11-16).
      • He came to his senses
      • Realized he could change and didn't have to live as he was living
      • He took positive action
      • Decided to "return home"
      • He repented and asked forgiveness
    • How does God's react?
      • He forgives and loves us unconditionally
      • He shows compassion
      • God always welcomes those who come to him in repentance, humility, and brokenness

Many people believe the lie that God will not forgive them.  But nothing could be farther from the truth.  Just remember that you are never beyond the reach of God's grace.  Regardless of what you have done, the Lord will show mercy. All that is required is that we confess and repent and move on with the Lord!

Have you walked away from God?  If so what do you plan to do about it today?
